Picture a pilates studio in Montilivi that decides to advertise on Instagram. The owner opens Meta Ads Manager, types “Girona” as the location, sets six euros a day and leaves the campaign running for two weeks. Messages come in, fewer than expected, and when the results are broken down by region there are people from Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia. Nobody typed the city wrong: when you choose it, Meta leaves a box ticked by default that widens the audience to people anywhere in Spain with some interest in Girona. For a neighbourhood studio that is money going elsewhere; for a hotel in the Barri Vell it may be exactly what it wants. Whether to leave it or untick it is the first decision in Meta Ads in Girona, and it is not the only setting that comes preset.

What Meta Ads is and what changes in Girona
Meta Ads is Meta's advertising system. From a single account, Ads Manager, you run ads on Instagram, Facebook and the company's other apps, including ads that open a WhatsApp chat when tapped. It is what most people call Instagram and Facebook ads. If this is the first time you are considering it, Instagram and Facebook ads: how much should you really spend? explains how it works, which objective to choose and how much to start with. Here we focus on what changes when the business is in Girona.
Girona has 108,352 inhabitants according to Idescat, the Catalan statistics institute, with 2025 data, and the Gironès county 208,967. Next to Barcelona it is a small market, and that shows in two ways. The audience runs out sooner when you run Meta Ads in Girona: on a small budget, within a few weeks the ad has been shown several times to almost everyone who could see it. And not everyone who spends the day in Girona lives there.
Locals and visitors: how many outsiders Girona has
Idescat measures this with its seasonal population estimate for Girona, which counts people who are in the city without living there and subtracts residents who spend time away, all converted into full-time people over a year. In 2024, on provisional figures, the city had on average the equivalent of 25,251 non-residents present every day, while 11,173 residents were away. The net result leaves Girona with 13.2% more people than residents, and the figure has risen every year since 2021. We also cover it in digital marketing in Girona, because it explains why so many businesses here are fully booked.

For your ads, this splits customers into two groups. Some live here and need you all year: the physiotherapist, the tutoring school, the garage, the hairdresser. Others come in: people who commute from Salt or Banyoles, the student who travels in for classes, the couple who come up from Barcelona for a Saturday or the family who drive in from the coast to shop. Each group needs a different setup in Meta Ads.
Meta Ads in Girona: the box that sends your ad elsewhere
When you choose a city or a region in the ad set, Meta turns on an option called “Reach more people likely to respond to your ads” by default. Its help page on how to reach people interested in your selected cities and regions explains it. Besides people who live in Girona, have been recently or go often, the ad is shown to people with an interest in the city: those who have searched for terms and Marketplace listings related to Girona, interacted with ads or Pages from here, have friends living in the city or live in a nearby town. Only people who live in the same country are included, in this case Spain.
Meta says this can lower your cost per result, because the system has more people to choose from. The question is whether those people are any use to you.
When to leave it on
If your customers come from elsewhere, the box works in your favour. Meta's own help gives travel, entertainment, retail and restaurants as examples. In Girona it suits a place to stay, a restaurant in the Barri Vell, a shop selling local produce, a guided tour or a concert: someone in Barcelona planning a weekend here is your audience, even if they are not here today.
When to turn it off
If what you sell is only bought by people who live nearby, the box makes you pay for impressions nobody can use. Someone in Madrid with friends in Girona is not going to join your pilates classes or bring their car to your garage. Meta recommends turning it off if you only want to reach people who live in the area, have been recently or go often, and in sectors with strict location limits, such as healthcare. For a clinic, a tutoring school, an accountancy practice or a gym in Girona, we turn it off almost every time.

The area: the city, a radius or the Gironès
The box is one part; the other is the area you draw. Ads Manager lets you choose cities, provinces, postcodes or a dropped pin with a radius around it, and every time you pick a place it suggests a default radius worth checking. If you choose the city, you can move that radius or pick “Current city only” so the ad stays inside Girona. With a postcode or a province the radius cannot be changed: the whole area counts.
For a neighbourhood business, a pin on the shop door with a radius of a few kilometres usually works: from the centre, Salt is about two and a half kilometres away and Sarrià de Ter four. If your customers come from the whole county, use the entire Gironès or a wider radius. What you should not do is leave “Girona” with the preset radius and the box ticked without looking at who you are paying to reach.
Two warnings from Meta itself. Location is not 100% accurate, so some messages will reach you from outside the area even with the right settings. And the radius does not extend into other countries, even if the circle on the map crosses a border: each country has to be added separately, which matters in Girona.
If your customers come from France
The box above only looks for people who live in Spain, and the radius stops at the border. If some of your customers come from Roussillon or further north for a few days, add France, or the French region you care about, as another location. And write that ad in French: a text written for someone who lives in Girona says little to someone in Perpignan.
In Catalan, Spanish or both
You can also limit the audience by language, but in Girona it is usually better not to: people here live in Catalan and Spanish, and a filter like that can leave out people who understand you perfectly. It works better to write the ad in the language your customers use with you, or to prepare two versions if you serve customers in both. How to do it on your website is in a website in Catalan and Spanish, and what happens with languages in searches is in Google Ads in Girona.
In a small city the same people keep seeing you
Every campaign report has a column that matters more in Girona than in Barcelona: frequency, the average number of times each person has seen your ad. Meta calculates it by dividing impressions by reach, and explains that it may sit at one or two per ad set or be much higher, depending on budget, audience size and schedule. It also warns what happens when it climbs: if performance drops as frequency rises, your audience may be getting saturated and it is worth changing the content or the targeting.

With a radius of a few kilometres the audience is small and saturation comes early. That is why we prepare three or four versions of the ad from the start, such as a product photo, a short video or a customer's review, and rotate them before they wear out. If someone appears in the ad, get their written permission first, as we explain in photos with people: permissions and image rights. And your own photos, of your premises and of streets people recognise, work better than a stock image that could be from any city.
What Meta decides and what you decide
Meta offers Advantage+ audience, where the system looks for whoever it thinks will respond. It is worth knowing which settings are limits and which are just hints. According to its help on audience controls and audience suggestions:
- Limits are location, minimum age, the audiences you exclude and languages. The ad does not go beyond them unless the “reach more people” box is ticked.
- Suggestions are age, gender, interests and the audiences you include. Meta shows the ad to people who match them and also to others if it thinks they will respond. The example is Meta's own: if you suggest women, the ad may also reach men.
If reaching a specific audience matters more to you than cost per result, those suggestions can be turned into limits. For most businesses in Girona it is enough to set the area and the minimum age properly and let Meta search within them.

If you advertise property or jobs
Some ads have their own rules on Meta, the Special Ad Categories: housing, employment, and financial products and services. Since 7 December 2021, anyone who wants to reach people in Europe with housing, employment or credit ads has had to declare it when creating the campaign. Meta's help explains how to choose a Special Ad Category.
In return, the audience is trimmed. You cannot choose age, which is fixed from 18 to 65+, or gender, use postcodes, exclude areas or build lookalike audiences. And according to Meta's developer documentation, in Europe the location has to cover at least 15 kilometres around any city, address or pin you choose.
In Girona that hits two sectors head on. An estate agency in the Eixample cannot show its flats to its own neighbourhood only: a 15-kilometre circle around Girona already takes in Salt, Sarrià de Ter, Celrà and Cassà de la Selva. And a restaurant looking for waiting staff for the summer has to declare the campaign as employment and cannot target an age band. In those cases the ad copy has to do the filtering: the neighbourhood, the price, the hours or the requirements, clear from the first line.
A separate case: since October 2025, Meta has not allowed ads about social issues, elections or politics in the European Union.
Girona's calendar in your ads
There are weeks when Girona's audience changes. In May, during Temps de Flors, the Barri Vell fills with visitors. At the end of October come the Fires de Sant Narcís (in 2026, from 23 October to 1 November). Then come Christmas, the sales and the summer, when plenty of people pass through Girona on their way to the Costa Brava. An ad planned for those dates has to be ready before they start.
Meta reviews every ad before it runs and, according to its help on scheduling, that review usually takes up to 24 hours, although sometimes longer. So it is worth creating the ad a few days early and giving it a start and end date. You can also schedule the dates and times it is delivered: a restaurant can advertise its set lunch only in the morning. Meta points out that it controls when the ad is delivered, not when it is seen, so someone may come across it a few minutes after the time you set.
Make the ad end in a conversation
For a local business, what usually works best is getting people to message you. Meta lets you run ads that open a WhatsApp chat with your business when tapped, with a first message already written, as long as the number is connected to your Facebook Page. How to get WhatsApp ready is in WhatsApp Business: what changes and how to set it up.
What decides whether that message becomes a sale is how long you take to reply. If the ad works on a Saturday and nobody answers until Monday, you have paid for a lead that went somewhere else; why it matters so much is in how fast you reply to a lead. If you would rather people leave their details, the click can go to a page built for the campaign, a landing page with a WhatsApp button and a form.
How to know if Meta Ads brings you customers in Girona
Meta's report shows impressions, clicks, messages and cost per result, but the number that matters is a different one: how many of those contacts end up buying. To know it you need to count the WhatsApp messages, calls and forms that come from the ads, and ask every new customer how they found you. We explain how in how to know where your customers come from.
If the ad sends people to your website, the Meta pixel can only load once the visitor accepts advertising cookies, so part of your visits will go unmeasured. And don't expect everything to match Google Analytics: Meta warns that its location reports may not match those of other tools, because each one measures location in its own way.
How much Meta Ads in Girona costs with us
Managing Meta Ads in Girona, together with Google Ads, is included in two of the plans on our pricing page:
- Mid Presence, €750 a month: high-performance hosting, migration, 15 email mailboxes, five articles a month on your website and five on your Google listing, replies to every review, GEO positioning and Google Ads and Meta Ads management.
- Advanced Presence, €1,500 a month: the same with seven articles a month on the website and seven on the listing, 25 mailboxes and two posts a month on your social media.
Prices exclude VAT, are billed month by month and there is no lock-in: to stop, you just give thirty days' notice, and there is no setup fee. Ad spend is separate and goes straight to Meta, on your card and in your name. We don't touch it or add a margin, so you always know which part is advertising and which part is our work. If all you are missing is a page to send the click to, Your Landing costs €100 a month plus VAT, hosting included.
How much to spend on ads is up to you. In a city the size of Girona and with a small radius, it does not take much money for the ad to reach the same people several times, which is why changing it in time usually pays off more than raising the budget. Campaigns are part of our digital marketing service, together with Google rankings, content and social media.
Meta Ads in Girona with a small team
We are three partners and we work from the Palau Firal in Sant Antoni de Calonge. Jordi runs the campaigns, deciding what is said, how it looks and where the money goes, and is the one who shows you the numbers when it is time to review them. Izan sets up the measurement: before anything goes live, it is clear what counts as a customer and where they came from. You talk to the people doing the work, not to a salesperson.
If you want to know whether advertising on Instagram is worth it for you, send us the link to your profile on WhatsApp and tell us who your customer is and where they come from. We will tell you how we would set up the campaign and whether Meta Ads should come first or something else, with no commitment. You can also write to us through the contact form.
